Los discursos políticos de estudiantes de inglés en clases de deliberación: Una alternativa contra la neutralidad del inglés

dc.descriptionLa neutralidad del inglés (Guerrero y Quintero, 2015) es un fenómeno discursivo que presenta la enseñanza del inglés como un campo y una actividad apolíticos. Esto, a su vez, tiene efectos sociales en las formas en que los profesores y estudiantes de inglés perciben las prácticas de la enseñanza del inglés y cómo deben actuar, ser, sentir y pensar dentro de las clases de inglés. Esto puede verse tanto desde una perspectiva macro (por ejemplo, las políticas lingüísticas como la estandarización en el Plan Nacional de Bilingüismo de Colombia) como desde una perspectiva mezzo y micro (por ejemplo, las prácticas institucionales, las decisiones de los profesores en el aula y el uso de libros de texto). Esta tesis informa sobre el estudio de los discursos políticos de estudiantes de inglés en clases de inglés basadas en deliberación para desafiar la llamada neutralidad de la lengua inglesa en el marco de una innovación pedagógica que creé para el estudio. La deliberación política se basa en una conceptualización de la política como proceso (Leftwich, 2014) y de los discursos políticos como ideológicamente influenciados y propensos a ejercer poder. Bajo esta lente, los estudiantes y profesores de inglés son agentes políticos que utilizan sus voces para construir realidades políticas. A través del Análisis Crítico del Discurso Político (ACDP), se estudiaron las afirmaciones argumentativas de los estudiantes en las clases de deliberación para ser descritas, interpretadas y explicadas (Fairclough, 2013a). El modelo de análisis del discurso político de Fairclough y Fairclough (2012) fue la base para la reconstrucción de los argumentos de dos de los deliberantes. Los resultados revelan que aunque la neutralidad del inglés limita las relaciones, los contenidos y los sujetos, los discursos políticos de los estudiantes en las clases de deliberación ejercen resistencia a través de las relaciones, los conocimientos/creencias y las identidades. Esto sugiere que es posible pensar en el aprendizaje y la enseñanza del inglés como una actividad y un campo políticamente comprometidos que abogan por el cambio social.
dc.description.abstractThe neutrality of English (Guerrero and Quintero, 2015) is a discursive phenomenon that portrays ELT as an apolitical field and activity. This in turn has social effects on the ways English teachers and students perceive ELT practices and how they should act, be, feel, and think within English classes. This can be seen from both a macro perspective (e.g., language policies such as standardization in Colombia’s Plan Nacional de Bilingüísmo) as well as a mezzo and micro perspectives (e.g., institutional practices, in-classroom teachers’ decisions and the use of textbooks). This thesis reports on the study of political discourses of English students in deliberation English classes to challenge the so-called neutrality of the English language within the frame of a pedagogical innovation that I created for the study. Political deliberation is based on a conceptualization of politics as a process (Leftwich, 2014) and political discourses as ideologically influenced and prone to exercise power. Under this lens, English students and teachers are political agents who use their voices to construct political realities. Through Critical Political Discourse Analysis (CPDA), the argumentative claims of students in the deliberation classes were studied to be described, interpreted, and explained (Fairclough, 2013a). Fairclough and Fairclough’s (2012) model of political discourse analysis was the basis for the reconstruction of the arguments of two of the deliberators. Findings reveal that, even though the Neutrality of English constrains relations, contents, and subjects, the political discourses of students in the deliberation classes exercise resistance through relationships, knowledge/beliefs, and identities. This suggests it is possible to think of English learning and teaching as a politically engaged activity and field that advocates for social change.
