José Ignacio ‘El Papi’ Tovar Medina (1922-2007), was a composer who provided in a very important way to popular-traditional Colombian music. He influenced so many amateur and professional musicians’ lives, in his labor as a performer, teacher and conductor. Among his songs stands out the bambuco Camino Real, piece that have become into an anthem for his region and most genre fans. This document reveals a complete catalogue of his life’s work based on the Tovar Family’s archive and other documental sources: songbooks, interviews, books, and recordings, giving birth to the Fondo musical José Ignacio ‘El Papi’ Tovar. In the same way a biographical approximation feed on his children’s anecdotes, wrote in a narrative form, precede the information synthesis cast by the catalogue. Finally, in the creative-performative propose, this document describes the selection, adaptation, and staging process of four composer’s songs in the Fura y Tena’s setting: tiple, piano, u-bass and two independent voices.
