Durante el siglo XVIII, fue utilizado en ceremonias religiosas en lugares como la Catedral de Bogotá. A finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX, el violonchelo comenzó a integrarse más formalmente en la vida musical de ciudades como Bogotá y Medellín. En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, figuras como el maestro Casimiro de Lugo incluyeron el violonchelo en sus orquestas, y hubo menciones de este instrumento en actividades culturales y sociales. Aunque el violonchelo no fue siempre protagonista, su participación en diversos repertorios y su presencia en eventos sociales y religiosos destacaron en la vida musical de la época. Con el paso del tiempo, la influencia europea y los inmigrantes también ayudaron a consolidar el uso del violonchelo, siendo un elemento clave en la configuración de la música académica en Colombia, en sus más notorias agrupaciones de instrumentistas pero sobre todo en las composiciones, las cuales abanderadas de las técnicas y estilos más vanguardistas, fueron viendo la luz del día al pasar de los años.The cello has been present in Colombia since colonial times, although its exact arrival is difficult to pinpoint.
