Resumen
The ASAB Faculty of Arts of the Francisco José de Caldas District University celebrated its first ten years in 2016. Ten years since the Bogotá Higher Academy of Arts (ASAB) joined the Francisco José de Caldas District University as a Faculty of Arts, consolidating this academic, research, creative, artistic, and cultural project, positioning itself as an indispensable connecting link for the city-region and the country.
From that celebratory evening, we recall the speech given by the famous clown Maladrés.
The renowned clown Maladrés, who was once the star of the Echec Circus, brings us his lecture "Practices of Failure," in which he in-depthly exposes the different theories, myths, and suspicions that have arisen around this burning issue and contrasts them with actual practice. The great Maladrés, who never dies trying and who, no matter how hard he tried, would never succeed in killing himself, demonstrates firsthand and without any tricks what only rigor, talent, passion (and most likely genetics) can bring about.
"Practices of Failure" is a space for meeting and reuniting contemporary artistic practices and their relationship with failure as a catalyst for creation. The confrontation with various topics of general and particular interest, as well as many others that are of no significance and will only serve as filler for this course, as all 16 sessions must be completed, will lead to a discussion that will serve, firstly, to enrich the thesis of the famous clown and, secondly, to help students fail with greater dignity.
For approximately seven years, Juan Fernando Cáceres has been shaping or discovering Maladrés, the central star of the Echec Circus. This surly character, like any clown, unbalances and jeopardizes the most characteristic aspects of its author, his qualities and flaws elevated to the most debauched power. Maladrés straddles the line between reality and fiction, having managed to enter the academic sphere through the teaching of a course in the Master of Art Studies program at the ASAB Faculty of Arts entitled "Practices of Failure." Thus, like a Trojan horse, Juan Fernando Cáceres himself questions the role of the teacher and the Academy through an extended performance, the perfect excuse to confront failure as a trigger for creation and creation as a means of self-knowledge.
#ASABMemory Event held on April 8, 2016, at the Gilberto Alzate Avendaño Foundation in Bogotá.
