The image presents a news called:
Our Industries V
The plant called, among us fique, belongs, according to some botanists, to the group of Agave americana, of the Amaryllis family; but the truth in the matter is that naturalists do not agree on the classification of this plant. Doctor Francisco Bayón quotes Endlicher, who has divided the agaves into two genera: agave americana, which supplies the pita, and Fureroya cubesis, which supplies the fique. Dr. W. Sandino Groot, dealing with amaryllids, says that the fique is removed from the variety called Fureroya gigantea, and in a note he observes that the Indians call the fureroya macho fique and the viviparous agave fique femaje. La planta llamada, entre nosotros fique, pertenece, según algunos botánicos, al grupo del Agave americana, de la familia de las amarilideas; pero lo cierto en el asunto es que los naturalistas no están de acuerdo en la clasificación de esta planta. El doctor Francisco Bayón cita á Endlicher, quien ha dividido los agaves en dos géneros: agave americana que suministra la pita, y Fureroya cubesis, que suministra el fique. El doctor W. Sandino Groot, tratando de las amarilideas, dice que el fique se retira de la variedad llamada Fureroya gigantea, y en una nota observa que los indios llaman fique macho al fureroya y fique hembra al agave vivípara.
