Resumen

This work aims to determine the deep relationship between absolute curvature and total geodesic curvature along a simple curve, and their connection with the topology of the curve and of the region it encloses on a regular surface; that is, to understand the geometric and topological meaning of the Gauss–Bonnet theorem. The study focuses on its local version, in addition to presenting some simple applications cited in \cite{doCarmo1984} and \cite{struik1988}. The proof of this theorem is not particularly complex, since it suffices to apply some previously mentioned results by substituting their equivalent expressions. The main difficulty lies in providing geometric and topological interpretations. Some results will be presented without proof in order to formulate the global version of the theorem, together with a single application. The study will initially focus on the local version of the theorem, emphasizing the role of absolute curvature as a measure of how a portion of the plane is deformed with respect to the normal direction. Furthermore, the interpretation of geodesic curvature as a reflection of the intrinsic behavior of the boundary of a simple region will be discussed. The theorem of rotation of tangents will also be analyzed, describing the total variation of the angle between the tangent vector of a coordinate curve and the direction of the tangent vector along a simple closed curve on the surface. All of this serves to reveal the connection that this result provides between the local analysis of curves on a regular surface and global invariant topological implications, thereby motivating an understanding of the meaning of the boundary term.
