Resumen
The program “Voces y Regiones”, broadcast by Laud Estéreo 90.4 FM, addressed the issue of mining exploitation in La Guajira and its social, environmental and cultural impact. Guajira leader Sira Ortiz was the main guest, who expressed her concern about the diversion of the Ranchería river, calling it an “environmental crime”. Ortiz highlighted the mobilization of local communities to stop the project, managing to paralyze it so far.
During the conversation, the negative consequences of indiscriminate mining were discussed, such as environmental degradation, loss of water resources, displacement of native communities and increased social problems such as prostitution and alcoholism in the region. Ortiz also pointed out the lack of benefits for local inhabitants in the face of the profits made by the multinationals, as well as the need for adequate compensation for the affected communities.
The program concluded with a call to action to protect La Guajira's natural resources and ensure sustainable development that respects the rights of its inhabitants.
