Pyrenes have been considered diagnostic characters at generic level in the family Rubiaceae; however, recent studies have shown that, in some genera, pyrenes are diagnostic also at the specific level. The goal of this project was to study and describe the morphological variation of pyrenes in Retiniphylium, and to show their taxonomic value at specific level. It was found that pyrenes vary mainly in presence or absence of wings, insertion point of the wings, and location of the germination opening. Based on these characters, five types of pyrenes were defined. This study shows the taxonomic value of pyrenes at specific level in the genus Retiniphylium and in the family Rubiaceae.
